LAMAVE’s Conservation through Education Initiative

“We need to reach out and get more people involved in the fight to protect these endangered species”, says Jessica Labaja, Executive Director of our partner LAMAVE. In a bid to engage the grassroots communities around their base in the Bohol Sea, a real bio-diversity hotspot in the vitally important Coral Triangle Region, LAMAVE have launched the initiative ‘Their Future Our Future’.

The campaign highlights the essential link between the wellbeing of the local community and effective conservation of marine wildlife and is designed to reinforce a petition to the Philippines Department of Tourism for legislation to protect marine species against unregulated tourism. By following a few simple rules during dives, local guides can safeguard their livelihoods by protecting species like whale sharks, manta rays and turtles.

All this is only possible with the committed support of the local community, which is very clear through the fabulous mural created in Leyte. Especially important are children, the conservationists of tomorrow.

LAMAVE needs our support to continue with these initiatives and Ocean Giants Trust is proud to be a supporter. If you would like to help to fund this educational conservation project you can donate here.
